Life at sea is seldom easy: hazardous working conditions, long or irregular hours leading to fatigue, lengthy absences from friends and family – all can result in stress and make seafarers vulnerable to depression. The additional problems arising from the Covid 19 pandemic have made life even more worrying.
So how can seafarers cope. One solution could be exercise coupled with meditation, or taking time to learn a new skill.
Often, however, seafarers reach for alcohol or drugs as a way of relaxing and lightening their mood. And while the effects may seem beneficial, at sea they are a high risk solution with real health and safety consequences.
